High Sheriff of Kent visits Rising Sun

High Sheriff of Kent

On Wednesday 5th February, we had the privilege of welcoming the High Sheriff of Kent to Rising Sun to learn more about the specialist domestic abuse support that we provide to victim-survivors across east Kent.

The High Sheriff of Kent is the oldest secular office under the Crown. Formerly the high sheriff was the principal law enforcement officer in the county but over the centuries most of the responsibilities associated with the post have been transferred elsewhere or are now obsolete, Today, the role is largely ceremonial and involves a great deal of supporting charities across the county.

Each year, the Chief Constable allocates funds to The High Sheriff of Kent through the Kent Police Property Fund to donate to local charities of their choice. The Kent Police Property Fund is an accumulation of monies held by the Chief Constable from the sale of property that does not belong to the Force but where all efforts to find the owners of items have failed. The Force cannot use these funds to support normal policing activities and so a fund is held to support local, third-sector community and charitable organisations that are aligned to the principles of policing.

This year, we were the incredibly grateful recipients of a £1,000 donation. The generous donation will enable us to continue supporting and empowering women and children who have been impacted by domestic abuse across Canterbury, Ashford and Folkestone & Hythe.

To say a heartfelt thank you for the kind donation, and discuss the work that we’re currently doing to support victim-survivors, we invited the High Sheriff of Kent to join our CEO Fran Ellis, and members of our Children and Young People Team for tea and biscuits.

We discussed the landscape of specialist domestic abuse support across Kent, the impact of this work on women and children and how professionals and agencies can work together to provide a more holistic journey of support to victim-survivors. It was incredibly insightful to learn more about the role of the High Sheriff of Kent, and see how our work overlaps and the connections and opportunities available.

We wish the best to the High Sheriff of Kent in their final month of service, and are grateful for all of their support over the past year to victim-survivors of domestic abuse.
