The Butterfly Project

Welcome to The Butterfly Project!

Rising Sun is working in partnership with Kent Police to deliver The Butterfly Project, a public art initiative of butterfly murals across Ashford town centre to raise awareness, encourage conversation and promote understanding of domestic abuse.

Together, the murals create a trail through Ashford which will:

  • Raise awareness of the realities of domestic abuse, including behaviours that may be hidden or misunderstood
  • Encourage reflection and conversation in a safe and approachable way
  • Signpost support to specialist services, showing that help is available and no-one has to face domestic abuse alone

Each mural includes a QR code linking to domestic abuse support, ensuring that information, support and hope are always within reach.

You can find the locations of each mural below.

Through this partnership, Rising Sun and Kent Police aim to create a community where abuse is better understood, recognised earlier and responded to with compassion and support.Every butterfly represents a journey. A reminder that change, support and hope are possible.

The Butterfly Project

Across Ashford town centre, 7 beautiful butterfly murals have been painted by local artists, students and police officers to create the Butterfly Project trail.

1 in 4 women will experience domestic abuse. Last year, 2.2 million women, almost 10% of the female population, experienced domestic abuse. In that time, Kent Police recorded, 36,337 violence against women and girl offences with domestic abuse accounting for 52% of these.

Why a butterfly?

Butterflies are a powerful symbol of change, hope, resilience and freedom. Their life cycle – from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly – reflects the journey of many people impacted by domestic abuse. Much of this experience can be hidden from the outside world. Like the butterfly within its cocoon, individuals may face fear, isolation and uncertainty during abusive or controlling relationships.

When a butterfly emerges, it represents strength, healing and renewal. It reflects the courage it takes to survive, rebuild confidence and move towards a safer future. Its ability to fly freely symbolises hope, independence and the possibility of a new beginning.

Each butterfly in this trail represents a story. Together, they highlight the reality that domestic can affect anyone, whilst recognising the strength it takes to seek help and move forward.

Show your support and follow the locations below to walk the Butterfly Project trail.

“Through the Butterfly Project, we hope to inspire greater understanding, empathy, and open conversations about domestic abuse, while reassuring those affected that they are not alone. Our partnership with Kent Police and Rising Sun is essential to ensuring that support is visible, accessible, and joined-up. Together, we can create safer communities, encourage people to seek help earlier, and send a powerful message that abuse will not be tolerated – and that hope, change, and recovery are always possible.”
